We are looking for interns, grad students, apprentices, and, at the other end of the age spectrum, a restless retiree or two.

Become a DSC Topic Editor. Develop expertise in a single subject by expanding our page listings, collecting news, and writing blog and social posts on your chosen topic.

Internships, apprenticeships. We seek one or more interns or volunteer editorial apprentices. Openings are suitable for journalism or English majors, with an interest in travel and protection of places – destination stewardship. This is a chance to stake out some professional accomplishments and get acquainted with a global network of people and organizations in the sustainable-tourism field. Develop and showcase your expertise over your byline in our new Topic Editor program. Work with the director, former National Geographic editor and program director Jonathan Tourtellot, in these areas:

• Social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram).
• WordPress website management.
• Newsletter content; e-mail list design and management.
• Occasional research, including news aggregation.
• For post-grad students: Original research, suitable for a thesis or capstone project, on case studies of holistic destination management and other topics.

Best for self-starters. Except for software work, fluency in idiomatic English is a must, along with excellent writing and editing skills. Experience with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint are required, and Mac platform is preferred; also helpful are WordPress, Excel, MailChimp, and communication apps.

This opportunity involves remote work with weekly meetings. The Washington, DC area is preferred but not essential. Sorry, token pay only. Internships are 10 to 20 hours per week, two months minimum. Apprenticeships are 20-40 hours per week for several months with full credit on the DSC website and bylines where appropriate. Graduate students: The Destination Stewardship Center has a rich array of topics suitable for masters theses or capstone projects in fields related to destination stewardship, sustainable tourism, conservation and cultural heritage, and governance. One of the most significant is our ongoing “Destination Councils” research program. The goal: To identify, analyze, profile and compare exemplary cases of collaborative destination stewardship. Original research required, but we’ll get you started. The world does not have enough of these places, and we want to showcase them and their methods for the benefit of proactive advocates in less fortunate destinations. Retirees and other volunteer seasoned professionals: Two roles available, One of them critical.

1. We seek a managerial volunteer to work with interns, apprentices, and other volunteers, managing schedules and deadlines while motivating and rewarding these hard working helpers.

And saving the most important for last . . .
2. We seek an experienced, business-savvy executive volunteer to take charge of building the DSC into a self-sustained membership and knowledge network organization. Suitable candidate might be a recently retired nonprofit or association executive or manager with a sincere interest in protecting the world’s distinctive places. D.C. area preferred. Future salary would depend on successful organizational development.
